Discipleship

Our Biblical Purpose is simple - To Make Disciples – Redeemed sinners transformed by the Power of the Gospel who become Christ followers being molded into His image and in turn making other Disciples there by Glorifying God.

Matthew 28:16-20 16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Following Jesus and making disciples is central in the New Testament. A disciple is, in a word, a LEARNER or a PUPIL.

The goal of a Disciple or Learner is to be like his teacher. Our goal is to be like Jesus! “The word disciple refers to a student apprentice. Disciples in Jesus’ day would follow their rabbi (teacher) wherever he went, learning from the rabbi’s teachings and being trained to do as the rabbi did. Basically, a disciple is a follower, but only if we take the term follower literally. Becoming a disciple of Jesus is as simple as obeying His call to follow.” Francis Chan “Multiply – disciples making disciples” page 16

Everything a DISCIPLE or LEARNER does centers upon Jesus. The command of Jesus in Matthew 28 is specific. As we are going, we are to MAKE DISCIPLES, which includes baptizing and teaching. Baptizing refers to proclaiming the Gospel message calling sinners to repent and believe the Gospel. After a person obeys that call, they are to identify themselves with Jesus in a public manner. Baptism is that public act to tell all those around that ‘I have obeyed Jesus’ call; I am now a follower of Jesus.’ Next is Teaching people to obey what JESUS taught in order to be His followers and learners. We teach God’s Word to ourselves and others and by God’s grace obey what He says. At Calvary, we are about BEING DISCIPLES & MAKING DISCIPLES. What does that look like? Remember, everything centers around Jesus and His Word. Everything centers on that relationship with Him.

  • L = Learn from Jesus
  • E = Engage with Jesus
  • A = Acclaim Jesus to others
  • R = Reproduce Jesus in others
  • N = Network our community to become Learners of Jesus

PRACTICALLY, HOW DO WE DO THIS?

  • L = Learn His Word (Read, Meditate, Memorize)
  • E = Engage His Word (Study, Dig, into the Word)
  • A = Acclaim His Word (Preach and Teach)
  • R = Respond to His Word (Apply and Do)
  • N = Nurture others in His Word. (Make Disciples – teach others to do the same.)

Our culture uses many words to describe this process, counseling, mentorship, and life coaching to name a few. We call it just what Jesus called it, MAKING DISCIPLES.

1-on-1 Discipleship

Part of the Discipleship process in meeting 1-on-1 with another member of the same sex, in walking through what it looks like to follow Jesus.  If you are interested having someone help you in figuring out what it looks like to follow Jesus, please contact the church office and we can connect you with another member of our church to disciple you.

Why Choose Calvary?

In choosing a church family, you look for things important to you. Here is what is important to Calvary. »

Discipleship

The purpose of Calvary is to glorify God by obediently making and equipping disciples of Christ, in Bristol and throughout the world. We believe this is accomplished as we grow in our faith and in the knowledge of His Word, and then teach others His truth so that they might live in obedience to Him. This growth in grace is a process that is accomplished in the power of the Spirit and under the authority of God’s Word.

Biblical Preaching

In a world of shifting allegiances and faulty foundations, we seek to stand firmly upon the truth of scripture. The Word of God is preached exegetically, in its entirety. The Bible is the Word of God and we are accountable to it. Everything we believe and do is instructed by the Bible. Everything we teach is rooted in the Bible, giving application to today’s world.

Fellowship

At Calvary, we are a community of Christ followers helping others to follow Jesus. The transformational love of Jesus provides the context of biblical community. Christianity is not a spectator sport. Authentic community is a vital part of the believer’s experience as we engage relationally with one another. We believe Christian growth is best done in the context of community. We bear one another’s burdens and develop deeper relationships. We are strengthened to go forth and be salt and light in our community and city.

The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News about God who created His world in perfection, man who rebelled against his Creator, and how the Creator gave Himself to rescue His rebellious creatures. The Gospel is central at Calvary. Jesus Christ came from the Father into the world, lived a perfect life that mankind could not, died on the cross in the rebel’s place, was buried and was proved to be the Son of God through His resurrection.
