Worship & Music

What is Worship:

The essence of biblical worship is an intense inner, Godward experience of the heart that leads the believer to outwardly and consciously reflect the worth and value of God in word and deed, both individually and corporately.

Our Desire:

At Calvary, we desire to express our worship to an audience of one – our Lord Jesus Christ. We do that in our singing, in our praying, in our giving and in listening to the Word of God preached. Our intent is that He gets all of our attention as we gather as His body.

What about the music:

Music is important in helping us focus on Him. The songs we sing will reflect His character, His attributes, His work and His grandeur. We sing the great hymns of the faith and we sing the songs of newer generations that exalt our Lord Jesus and center on Him. Our worship leaders, musicians, our choir and soloists help lead us to this one end.

Stirring One Another in Worship:

Our desire in worship is to also lead God’s people to the throne room of His mercy and grace, knowing that only He can meet our deeper need and transform us into the glorious image of His Son. Both the Spirit of God and the truth of His Word are vital as we worship Him.

Why Choose Calvary?

In choosing a church family, you look for things important to you. Here is what is important to Calvary. »

The purpose of Calvary is to glorify God by obediently making and equipping disciples of Christ, in Bristol and throughout the world. We believe this is accomplished as we grow in our faith and in the knowledge of His Word, and then teach others His truth so that they might live in obedience to Him. This growth in grace is a process that is accomplished in the power of the Spirit and under the authority of God’s Word.

Biblical Preaching

In a world of shifting allegiances and faulty foundations, we seek to stand firmly upon the truth of scripture. The Word of God is preached exegetically, in its entirety. The Bible is the Word of God and we are accountable to it. Everything we believe and do is instructed by the Bible. Everything we teach is rooted in the Bible, giving application to today’s world.

At Calvary, we are a community of Christ followers helping others to follow Jesus. The transformational love of Jesus provides the context of biblical community. Christianity is not a spectator sport. Authentic community is a vital part of the believer’s experience as we engage relationally with one another. We believe Christian growth is best done in the context of community. We bear one another’s burdens and develop deeper relationships. We are strengthened to go forth and be salt and light in our community and city.

The Gospel

The Gospel is the Good News about God who created His world in perfection, man who rebelled against his Creator, and how the Creator gave Himself to rescue His rebellious creatures. The Gospel is central at Calvary. Jesus Christ came from the Father into the world, lived a perfect life that mankind could not, died on the cross in the rebel’s place, was buried and was proved to be the Son of God through His resurrection.
